Save the Sparrow - Odisha coastline residents provide makeshift homes to save the brids

Rabindranath Sahu, a resident of Puranabandha village in Odisha, has been successful in reviving the population of endangered Olive ridley sea turtles through his conservation efforts. After observing the declining population of house sparrows in his village, Sahu began including them in his conservation efforts. By installing earthen pots and wooden boxes in his village, he was able to increase the population of sparrows from seven to around 500. His efforts have now spread to 17 districts in Odisha, with local communities being guided to protect these birds.

Sahu organizes training sessions to educate people about the importance of conserving sparrows and the threats they face, such as the harmful effects of mobile phone towers. The administration, as well as environmentalists, turtle researchers, and tourists support Sahu's efforts and provide financial help to purchase boxes for sparrow conservation. House sparrows are important as insect controllers, and they play a vital role in the ecosystem by feeding their young ones an insect diet. World Sparrow Day, observed annually on March 20, is a day to raise awareness about the protection of sparrows.
