Earth Day is on April 22 every year. This is an important day for our planet. Everything on earth is clearly in bad shape, and everyone must do something. Lots of potentially harmful trash is lying around, and climate change is rapidly getting worse. We need to celebrate Earth Day 2024 even more.
What We Saw Before: From Protest to Places on Earth
More and more, it became clear in 1970 that uncontrolled economic growth was bad for the environment. We're now entering the past. Senator Gaylord Nelson and environmental activist Denis Hayes organised numerous "teach-ins" in schools across the US to draw attention to the environmental damage. After what happened across the country, millions of people from all walks of life came together to demand change.
Following Earth Day 1970, many people's lives changed in big ways. This led to the creation of numerous regulations aimed at safeguarding animals and reducing waste. Because of this, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was made. The eff The effectiveness of the activity was evident to everyone. 1990 was Earth Day all over the world. This made big agreements possible, like the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
The most dangerous risks are plastic waste and climate change
It's Earth Day today, which is a big day. The weather is getting warmer and changing all the time. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that if we don't cut down on greenhouse gases, bad things will happen. Sad to say, 2023 was the hottest year ever. Things need to change quickly.
Because there is a lot of plastic trash in the world, the climate disaster is getting worse. We now find plastic everywhere, from the deepest mines to the highest mountains. Very small pieces of plastic trash get into our bodies, food chains, and oceans. "Planet vs. Plastics" is the theme for Earth Day 2024, so it's clear we need to move quickly to keep this issue from getting worse.
Making the Power to Change: Individual Actions and Global Effects
A lot of people doing little things can make a big difference, even if it seems like we can't solve our problems. There are crucial places where we can make significant improvements.
- Reducing Our Carbon Footprint: We must reduce our use of transportation because it is a major contributor to greenhouse gas pollution. When we walk, ride bikes, share, or take the bus, we leave a lot less carbon behind. Drive electric or hybrid cars, as well as support clean energy sources, to have less of an impact on the world.
- Sustainable Consumption: Sustainable consumption means that the things we buy have an effect on the world at large. Purchasing locally, organically, and ethically produced goods can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of production and transportation. We can take numerous actions to safeguard the environment, such as recycling, burning, and avoiding single-use plastics.
- Changing the way we get energy: Using too many fossil fuels is a big contributor to climate change. We must support renewable energy sources like the sun, wind, and geothermal power to ensure global sustainability. Asking energy companies to use clean energy can also be helpful.
A Call for Everyone to Work Together on the Way Forward
People work together on Earth Day. Here's how we can make good use of its energy:
- Community involvement: Plan or take part in Earth Day events in your area, such as cleanups, tree planting campaigns, or educational classes. Get people in your neighbourhood to talk about environmental problems and look for long-term solutions.
- Helping Environmental Groups: Many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and environmental groups are working hard to stop climate change and plastic waste. By giving these groups your time or money, you can make their work even more powerful.
- Advocacy and Policy Change: Make sure that elected officials are responsible for environmental problems. Push for strong environmental laws that encourage eco-friendly actions and discourage waste.
- Spreading Awareness: Teach other people about the environmental problem and encourage them to do something about it. Share information on social media, join conversations, and urge people in your social circle to act in ways that are good for the environment.
Everyone needs to wake up and plan for a future that will last. Let's do something for Earth Day 2024. The world can have a good future if we all work together and try to make things better. Every year on Earth Day, do more than one thing. Let's make the world a better place and help each other out.
