Is there a career for Gaming? Yes, India's Gaming sector to create 1 lakh job opportunities

On Friday a staffing company named TeamLease Digital released a report titled “Gaming –Tomorrow’s Blockbuster”. According to the report released by TeamLease, over the next year, exponential growth is expected in the gaming sector. The projected growth will create many new job opportunities across domains like programming, testing, animation, design and other miscellaneous roles. With the new estimates, the Indian gaming industry is likely to thrive in the coming years.

Sunil Chemmankotil, CEO of TeamLease Digital, said in a statement that despite hurdles like frequent regulatory changes in India’s gaming sector, the industry is on the trajectory to grow by 20 to 30 per cent by the Financial year 2023 and is expected to reach a net worth of INR 38,097 crore by the year 2026.

The report further underlined a 40 per cent increase in the participation of women audience in the industry. According to the new data released in the report, India’s gaming industry is about to witness more women joining the workforce, with many occupying leadership ranks in the industry.

Today, India’s current gaming sector constitutes 90 per cent of millennials and Gen-Z workforce and the majority of these professionals aspire to work in emerging sectors like gaming.

For obtaining a job in the gaming sector, a candidate is required to have qualifications ranging from, BCA in software and a diploma in 2D, 3D, Animation, and VFX to MTech or BTech in IT as well as a diploma in specialized languages like C++, Java and DevOps.

With the world population reaching 8 Billion this month, India will have an upper hand in terms of technology and workforce. As of right now, there are around 50,000 people who are directly employed in the industry. With programmers and developers constituting over 30 per cent of the workforce.

TeamLease Digital’s Business head Munira Loliwala highlighted the industry’s exponential prospects in a statement on Friday. According to him, with a strong gaming community of 480 million, India is the second largest in the world, after China.

In order to address this growth, employment in the sector will also increase significantly by 2023, thereby creating 1 lakh new jobs in the sector and is further estimated to increase by nearly 50 per cent taking the sector's overall growth trajectory to more than 113 per cent by 2025. The report also made an in-depth analysis of the sector’s skilling and hiring trends as well as growth opportunities.

In terms of salaries, the highest-paying positions in the industry will be of QA testers (Rs 5.11 lakh per annum), game producers (Rs 10 lakh per annum), game developers (Rs 5.25 lakh per annum), game designers (Rs 6.5 lakh per annum), and software engineers (Rs 5.5 lakh per annum).

Over the next few years, aided by the sturdy growth in the sector, India will witness exponential progress and will also have a positive impact on employment in the sector.
