The tragic story began when Brehmer a resident of Anchorage, Alaska has developed an online relationship with Darin Schilmiller a 21-year-old man from Indiana. Schilmiller convinced Brehmer that he was a millionaire and offered her a large sum to commit a murder. Under his influence, she with the help of two of her friends, Kayden McIntosh and Caleb Leyland, she carried out the murder of Hoffman. That was later confirmed by the photos and videos which Brehmer sent to Schilmiller on Snapchat as proof.

Brehmer was found guilty to murder earlier in 2023 and received a 99-year sentence. Her accomplices McIntosh and Leyland were also charged. Schilmiller who had instigated the crime was also sentenced to 99 years for his role.
