USA : Georgia declares October as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’

To recognize the contributions of the thriving Hindu-American community in the state, the US state of Georgia has declared October as "Hindu Heritage Month."

"The vibrant Hindu American community has contributed tremendously to the vitality of the State of Georgia by enriching the lives of its citizens," the proclamation dated August 23 read.

Governor Brian Kemp announced October to be "Hindu Heritage Month" in a proclamation. It was stated that the many spiritual traditions that originated in India will be highlighted as part of the celebration of the Hindu heritage.

A US-based Hindu advocacy group called CoHNA (Coalition of Hindus of North America) welcomed the decision and thanked Governor Kemp for highlighting the Hindu community, which makes a major contribution to many different industries.

"This was made possible by the untiring dedication of our friends at the Hindus of Georgia PAC. Hinduism has contributed greatly to the cultural milieu of America," the Hindu group said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Georgia Assembly passed a resolution criticizing Hinduphobia earlier this year, making it the first American State to do so.

The resolution critiqued Hinduphobia and anti-Hindu bigotry and cited the Hindu community's contributions of Yoga, ayurveda, meditation, food, music, and arts in enriching the lives of millions of people and enhancing the cultural fabric of American society.

Hindu Heritage Month (HHM) is a global initiative that highlights Hinduism as a tradition and its contributions to human society, according to the Hindu American Foundation.

October is significant for recognition because major Hindu festivals such as Navratri and Diwali are celebrated in this month and in addition to that Mahatma Gandhi was born in this month.
