Many highly classified documents about the Ukraine war have been leaked online, posing a "very serious" risk to national security, according to a top Pentagon spokesman. Senior commanders are moving fast to offset the harm.
According to Chris Meagher, the defence secretary's assistant for public relations, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin first learned on Thursday that a number of confidential briefing slides outlining American military operations in the Ukraine War and foreign intelligence had been leaked.
The department is closely examining "how and to whom this type of information is provided, "Meagher said that efforts had already been made to tighten control over who can access it, but he did not elaborate.
He and Meagher declined to go into detail about the release's scope, how it occurred, or which world leaders the United States had spoken to. Patel continued and said that there is “No question" the documents' release presents a risk to national security.
Spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters, at the State Department, that U.S. officials “are engaging with allies and partners at high levels over this, including to reassure them of our commitment to safeguarding intelligence and the fidelity of securing our partnerships."
