An eight-year-old boy, who was born in Mongolia but raised in the United States, has been recognized as the reincarnation of the Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche, the third most important spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism. The boy was recognized by the Dalai Lama during a ceremony in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, in the presence of around 600 followers. The news has generated excitement and apprehension in Mongolia, with concerns about possible animosity with Beijing. The boy, named Aguidai Altannar, is one of a pair of twins and is expected to undergo extensive training in the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism and take on a leadership role within the religious community. The recognition of the boy as a tulku, a reincarnated master, highlights the significance of spiritual leaders in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
