Russia implements entry restrictions on 500 Americans including former US President Barack Obama

On Friday, Russia made an announcement regarding the ban on the entry of 500 individuals from the United States, including former President Barack Obama. This action was taken in response to the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration, with the Russian foreign ministry stating that these individuals were prohibited from entering the country due to the ongoing anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the United States. Notably, the inclusion of Barack Obama on the list was specifically highlighted by the ministry.

In a retaliatory move, the United States expanded its sanctions blacklist, targeting additional companies and individuals in an effort to further restrict Russia's economy in response to its actions in Ukraine. The Russian foreign ministry emphasized that Washington should have been aware that any hostile actions against Russia would not go unanswered. Included in the list of individuals banned by Russia were renowned television personalities such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers, as well as CNN anchor Erin Burnett and MSNBC presenters Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough.

Russia claimed that these individuals played a role in spreading anti-Russian sentiments and disseminating disinformation. In an announcement, Russia disclosed that it had placed certain individuals on a blacklist, which included senators, congressmen, think tank members, and company executives who were involved in the provision of weapons to Ukraine. Russia further disclosed that it had denied a consular visit to American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who had been detained in March on charges of espionage. The justification provided by Russia was based on Washington's refusal to issue visas to journalists accompanying Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on a trip to the United Nations in April.
