Over 400 killed, thousands injured as clashes escalate in Sudan

The World Health Organisation said on Friday that the violence in Sudan has resulted in more than 400 fatalities and more than 3,500 injuries.

WHO spokesman Margaret Harris said during a press conference in Geneva that "We are aware of, 413 people have died and 3,551 people have been injured." According to UNICEF, at least nine children were among those who perished, and more than 50 children reportedly suffered injuries.

Harris, citing data from the Sudanese health ministry, said that 20 healthcare institutions had shut down and another 12 were at risk of doing the same.

According to her, this would affect "not only the people who have been hurt during this terrible fighting but the people who were in need of treatment before." As a result, children in the nation are experiencing severe hardship, according to UNICEF spokesperson James Elder.

Children will continue to suffer as long as there is conflict. Due to the battle, several families are imprisoned, with little to no access to power and a constant dread of running out of food, water, and medicine.

He claims that the prevalence of child malnutrition in Sudan is already among the highest in the world and that 50,000 extremely critically malnourished children are now unable to receive treatment that might save their lives.

"This is life-threatening," he said. According to Elder, the worst cases "are fed with tubes because that's literally the only way they can be fed.

What transpires when the medical personnel is forced to escape because of bombing or shelling that begins outside the hospital? Elder also warned that the fighting was jeopardizing the cold storage of more than $40 million worth of vaccines and insulin because of power disruptions and fuel shortages.

Children must be protected from danger, he said, therefore "we need forces to immediately halt hostilities and for all parties to respect their international obligations."
