Nearly a million people without power in US, as severe winter stroms hit

As part of a multiday event that has already closed roads and resulted in numerous power outages, brutal winter storms brought significant icing, strong wind gusts, and heavy snow across portions of the US from California to the Northeast on Thursday. This is happening even as the Southeast enjoys unseasonably high temperatures.
Prior to warnings abruptly ceasing over the Northern Plains and Great Lakes, more than 60 million people were under winter weather alerts early on Thursday morning, extending from the West into the northern Plains, Great Lakes area, New York, and New England.

According to tracker PowerOutage.us, it is a portion of storms that have already left about one million homes and businesses without power, mostly in Michigan, where freezing rain and ice have destroyed electrical wires and trees.
