Leaked documents related to the war in Ukraine were recently discovered on the Discord platform, which offers real-time voice, video, and text chats. The documents, which were labeled as top secret and included sensitive intel regarding Ukraine's air defense systems, were initially shared in a small group by an anonymous member before being disseminated to a larger group. The scale of exposure is still unknown, but the leaks have raised concerns among US officials about national security risks.
While senior leaders are taking steps to mitigate the damage, they are still uncertain about who is behind the leak and their motives. The Pentagon is cautioning against promoting or amplifying any of the leaked documents and is investigating how this type of information is distributed and to whom. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is also reaching out to allies and holding daily meetings to assess the damage caused by the leak.
South Korea's deputy national security adviser, Kim Tae-hyo, has stated that information contained in purportedly leaked US confidential documents, which appeared to be based on internal discussions among top South Korean officials, is "untrue" and "altered". The leaked documents included conversations between top South Korean security officials about US pressure on Seoul to help supply weapons to Ukraine. Mr Kim said that both countries had assessed that much of the information disclosed had been altered, but he did not specify which part of the document was untrue.
In addition to the conversations between top South Korean officials about US pressure to help supply weapons to Ukraine, the leaked documents also revealed a top-secret analysis of intelligence service ties between Russia's FSB and agencies in the UAE. The UAE is a country that hosts a US air base and works closely with Washington on many security matters.
According to the analysis, there are deepening ties between the FSB and the UAE agencies, with officers from the FSB claiming that the UAE had agreed to work with Russia "against US and UK intelligence agencies". The UAE government has denied the allegations, while US officials have declined to comment on the document.
