Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has announced her separation from her partner, Andrea Giambruno, a television journalist who has been criticized for sexist comments. "My relationship with Andrea Giambruno, which lasted almost 10 years, ends here," Meloni shared on her social media accounts on Friday. "Our paths have diverged for some time, and now the time has come to acknowledge it," said her statement.
The couple, who met in 2015, have a seven-year-old daughter. In her statement, the Italian PM also thanked Giambruno, 41, as in her words she said, "wonderful years we spent together, for the difficulties we went through and for giving me the most important thing in my life, our daughter Ginevra"
Giambruno came under fire earlier this week after a TV programme called Striscia La Notizia, broadcast comments he made off-camera, in which he appeared to flirt with a female colleague by telling her, "You're so clever... Why didn't I meet you sooner?"
Other explicit off-air comments were then broadcast on Thursday, in which Giambruno was heard asking another colleague whether she was in an open relationship or she is single.
As per the BBC report, Giambruno appeared as boasting about having an affair and saying "everyone" at Mediaset, the TV company he works for, "knows it, and now you do too", and then tries to make lewd references to group sex. Further, he is heard asking, "Will you join our group, our working group?"
Moreover, The journalist has not spoken about the prime minister's social media posts or his off-air remarks yet.
Several months back, he faced allegations of victim-blaming after he suggested that young women could avoid sexual assault by not getting drunk.
