US President Joe Biden will visit India next week to take part in the G20 Summit, the White House announced on Saturday. On September 8, Biden will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in person after arrival on September 7.
At the G20 Summit, which will take place in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, leaders from around the world will be hosted by India as the G20's current president. The G20's 2023 theme is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," or "One Earth, One Family, One Future."
“On Thursday (September 7), the President will travel to New Delhi, India to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit. On Friday, the President will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” the White House said in its week ahead schedule of the president released Friday night.
According to the White House, Biden is going to thank PM Modi for leading the G20 during the summit.
“While in New Delhi, the President will also commend Prime Minister Modi's leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026," it added.
The G20 is an intergovernmental assembly of the largest developed and developing nations in the world. Along with the European Union (EU), the bloc also includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, and the United States. This season, Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates are the guest nations.
The majority of the G20 leaders, including Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, have already confirmed that they will attend the summit.
According to PTI, although India has not yet received any confirmation of Chinese President Xi Jinping's attendance, the chances of him being present in person at the G20 conference on September 9 and 10 are "very low".
Among the G20 leaders who have confirmed their presence at the summit are Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
