Despite efforts to negotiate a cease-fire, a key militant commander was killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, on Friday, Palestinian militants fired rockets at Jerusalem. This escalated the most violent crisis in months.
According to the Palestinian health ministry, two Palestinians were killed by an Israeli bombing in the afternoon in a residential building in Gaza City.
A senior commander of the Islamic Jihad movement had been the target, according to the Israeli military. Iyad Al-Hassani, a member of the group's armed wing's decision-making council, was killed in the airstrike, according to the Islamic Jihad. He is the sixth senior member of Islamic Jihad who died in this exchange of fire.
As a result of the fighting that began on Tuesday between Israel and Islamic Jihad, around 33 Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip, the second-largest militant organisation in the territory after Hamas.
According to Josh Hasten, a representative for the area, a missile slammed into an open field in the Israeli town of Bat Ayin, south of Jerusalem, as a consequence of Islamic Jihad increasing its longer-range rocket attacks. Israeli settlement residents nearby said they heard explosions. Jerusalem, which is the location of important religious sites for Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, was filled with thuds.
Islamic Jihad, said in a statement, “The bombing of Jerusalem sends a message. What is happening in Jerusalem is not separate from Gaza.”
According to the Israel Defence Forces, Israeli aeroplanes attacked military outposts of Islamic Jihad and mortar launchers all around the Gaza Strip, in retaliation. To create a new defence, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said that he was undertaking a security evaluation. "We continue", he tweeted.
Israeli attacks have killed five senior Islamic Jihad members since Tuesday and have attacked at least 215 locations in Gaza, including militant training camps and rocket launch sites. Over 900 rockets launched by Islamic Jihad in response have been aimed toward heavily populated areas of Israel.
