Four children, including a newborn, were discovered alive in the Amazon Rainforest more than two weeks after they had survived an aircraft accident that claimed the lives of their mother and two other passengers, Colombian officials announced on Thursday. President Gustavo Petro said on Wednesday that the four youngsters who had been missing since the plane accident had been recovered alive after "difficult search efforts by our Military Forces." He expressed "joy for the country."

According to the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF), the accident on May 1 that claimed the lives of three persons took place on the border between Caquetá and Guaviare in the country's southern central region, some 250 miles south of the capital city of Bogota. The group said on Wednesday that the four children had "been found alive and that they are also in good health," adding that their current top priority is helping the children get back in touch with their families.

As of Thursday morning, neither the area where the children were found nor the names of the people who perished had been disclosed by the authorities. According to images shared by the Colombian army, which sent out more than 100 troops and search dogs to find the children, hair ties, scissors, and a baby bottle were found on the forest floor of the rainforest on Wednesday in a remote area of the municipality of Solano.
