Authorities in Colombia have raised concerns over the increased seismic activity around the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which caused the country's deadliest recorded natural disaster in 1985, resulting in the loss of 25,000 lives. On Thursday, the Colombian Geologic Service issued an orange alert, indicating the possibility of an eruption in the next few weeks or days. Fracturing around the southwest slope of the volcano has been observed by the agency since March 24, with a rise in earthquakes and tremors. Although most earthquakes were small, residents of nearby towns reported ash coming out of the peak. The Nevado del Ruiz is located in the central region of Colombia, part of the Andes Mountains and has been active for more than 8,600 years, covered with glaciers. Its eruption on November 13, 1985, killed 21,000 people, causing the fourth-highest death toll from a single eruption in history.
