At least 111 individuals lost their lives and over 230 sustained injuries following a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck northwestern China on Monday. The official Xinhua news agency reported that the earthquake resulted in the loss of 100 lives in Gansu province and an additional 11 lives in the neighbouring province of Qinghai. However, there is currently no information available regarding the number of missing individuals.
At 11.59 pm local time (1559 GMT) on Monday, Gansu's Jishishan county was struck by the earthquake. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the epicentre of the quake was located 102 kilometres (63 miles) west-southwest of Lanzhou, the provincial capital city of Gansu. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres.
On Tuesday morning, China's northwestern Xinjiang region was hit by another earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, as reported by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
Rescue operations in China
The Wire News Report states that the earthquake has caused damage to certain water and electricity lines, as well as causing disruptions to transportation and communications in the affected areas. However, further information has not been disclosed by the authorities.
A team has been appointed to assess the magnitude of the destruction and propose suggestions for local relief operations.
DW News reported that the Finance Ministry and the Emergency Management Ministry of China have allocated 200 million yuan (€25.8 million, $28 million) in natural disaster relief funds to the earthquake-affected provinces of Gansu and Qinghai.
Despite the escalating tensions between Taiwan and China, President Tsai Ing-wen extended her government's assistance to China and expressed her heartfelt sympathies to those who have suffered the loss of their loved ones.
