Chilling Charm: A Spooky Island of Dolls in Mexico City

This spooky and mysterious place is specifically found in the canals of the Xochimilco neighborhood of Mexico City. It is called Isla de las Muñecas in Spanish.

The legend goes by that in the 1950’s Don Julián Santana Barrera abandoned his family to enjoy his solitude on a fertile piece of land on Teshuilo Lake.

Occasionally, this man used to wander in the neighboring village Barrio de la Asunción to sell his vegetables and enjoy the popular pulque — an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented sap of the agave plant.

One day, Barrera walked upon the dead body of a drowned girl and her doll. This incident made him superstitious and he started fearing the wrath of her haunted spirit.

He started hanging dolls on the trees to please her spirit. It is said that those dolls had severed limbs, decapitated heads, and empty eye sockets as he used to collect them from garbage and canals.

It was believed that he frequently used to hear the girl whispering “I want my doll” and her footsteps after the sunset.

Later in 2001, he was found dead in the same way at the exact spot where he found that girl. People say that they still hear the dolls whispering to them.

With hundreds of those disturbing dolls hanging on old crooked trees, it is a one-of-a-kind Unesco World Heritage Site with a tribal horror movie vibe.
