Councillor Chaman Lal, hailing from Pakhowal village in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district, has created history by becoming Birmingham's first-ever British-Indian Sikh Lord Mayor. In 1964, Lal migrated to England with his mother to reunite with his father, Sardar Harnam Singh, a British-Indian army officer who served in the Italian campaign during World War II.Lal's journey in public service began when he joined the Labour Party in 1989. Throughout his career, he has actively participated in various social justice campaigns, advocating against inequality and discrimination in all its forms.Having been elected to the Soho and Jewellery Quarter ward in 1994, he has dedicated the past 30 years to serving the city council.

Expressing his pride and gratitude, Lal stated during the mayor making ceremony at Birmingham City Council House last week, "By accepting this honor, I am honored to serve this magnificent city as the Lord Mayor. When I first joined the city council almost three decades ago, I never envisioned becoming the Lord Mayor someday."Before assuming the esteemed position of Birmingham's First Citizen, Lal held several positions, such as the Chair of the Sustainability and Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee (OSC), as well as being a member of the Co-ordinating OSC and the West Midlands Combined Authority Transport Scrutiny Sub-Committee.With extensive experience on the West Midlands Transport Authority, Lal possesses a strong passion for enhancing public transportation systems and has actively pursued initiatives in this regard.
