At the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, global leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed global issues which included ongoing Ukraine war. Russia highlighted the growing interest of the Global South and East in establishing stronger connections with BRICS also stated that more than 30 countries have expressed their desire to join the BRICS alliance.

Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During the meeting, Modi emphasized on the importance of India-China relations for both countries and for regional and global peace. PM modi in a tweet stated that the foundation of strong bilateral ties would be built on mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity. This Bilateral Talks marks a significant step towards improving relations between India and China.
PM Modi Calls for Global Reforms
During the session PM Modi focused on India's commitment to welcoming new partner countries into BRICS. He emphasized that any decision regarding new members should be made unanimously while respecting the opinions of BRICS' founding members. Modi also pushed for reforming global institutions such as the United Nations Security Council, Multilateral Development Banks, and the World Trade Organization (WTO). He stressed that while BRICS continues to evolve, it should focus on reforming existing institutions rather than replacing them.
PM Modi to hold bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping
A key highlight of the summit is the anticipated bilateral meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This meeting marks the first formal discussion between the two leaders since the border tensions between India and China erupted in May 2020. This summit will offer them a chance to discuss issues in more detail. Vikram Misri (Foreign Secretary) confirmed about the meeting, which is expected to address the ongoing military stand-off and patrol agreements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Modi also met Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a range of issues, including defense cooperation, energy ties, and political collaboration. During their talks, Modi extended an invitation for Putin to visit India next year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is now expanding with four new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates joined in January 2024. Putin emphasized that BRICS expansion would focus on maintaining the group’s efficiency.
Modi’s Meeting with Iranian President
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, both leaders discussed to enhanced cooperation across a number of sectors, especially on connectivity projects, like Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). Modi congratulated Pezeshkian, welcomed Iran into the BRICS family. The two leaders also discussed on the West Asia conflict and extended the invitation to Pezeshkian to visit India.
