You can do your household work on Fridays- Puducherry women govt staffers get an exemption

Women who work for the government in Puducherry will now be granted special permission to do Friday poojas for two hours.

On Thursday, the AINRC administration led by Chief Minister N Rangaswamy approved the proposal. This was done by Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan.

According to the news, government women employees can now request a two-hour special permission to report to work on Fridays at 11 AM instead of 9 AM. The 2-hour exemption would allow women to complete home tasks, participate in religious rites, and conduct poojas on Fridays, according to the circular.

Women in Puducherry strongly adhere to Friday's special poojas, which are a regular religious practice.

Rangaswamy emphasized that the initiative aims to give working women in government offices enough time to complete their household chores and religious obligations without difficulty. This system will be implemented on a rotating basis among the women employees so as not to disrupt business operations at the government offices.

Additionally, he added, a woman employee can only use the special permission for two hours on three working Fridays per month in order to prevent women employees from using the exemption simultaneously and to not burden the other working employees.

Government employees have praised the decision, noting that it will relieve them of the stress of having to rush to work every Friday following the ceremonies.

However, women employees who work for essential service providers, such as public institutions like hospitals, schools, and police departments, will not be eligible for this special permission.

The female workers claimed to understand the justification for the decision, but they asked the government to look into the possibility of extending this special exemption to female workers who work in the important sector as well.
