Yellow Alert in Himachal: 500 Roads, 4 National Highways blocked due to Heavy Snowfall

Popular Tourist Destination in Winters, Himachal Pradesh, got snowfall a little late this season, but now consecutive days of moderate to heavy snowfall have posed significant challenges as 500 roads and 4 national highways have been closed for vehicular traffic, according to state officials.

Capital City Shimla experienced a brief spell of snowfall on February 3, Intermittent snowfall and overcast skies were witnessed in the city and its adjoining areas. This brought a sense of relief and joy to residents and tourists.

SNOWFALL IN HIMACHAL PRADESH

According to the state emergency operation centre, Shimla is the worst-hit with 161 blocked roads, followed by Lahaul and Spiti with 153, Kullu with 76, and Chamba district with 62 closures. In addition, 674 transformers and 44 water supply schemes have suffered disruptions, posing challenges for locals.

The lowest night temperature was recorded in Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti at a bone-chilling minus 8.1 degrees Celsius. Narkanda, Kalpa, Dalhousie, and Manali experienced sub-zero temperatures as well. Shimla recorded a minimum night temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy snow in isolated places of the state on February 4, and the local Meteorological station has issued 'yellow' alert for thunderstorms and lightning in isolated places on February 3 along with heavy snow on February 4.

ROADS BLOCKED IN HIMACHAL PRADESH, DUE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL

Public Works Department (PWD) officials are working tirelessly to clear the snow from the roads at the earliest. Despite a slight rise in minimum temperatures, intense cold wave conditions persist in most parts of the state. However, no snow or rain has been reported yet. 

As reported by the agriculture department, Farmers and growers are however expected to benefit from the recent snowfall as they are facing losses due to an extended dry period. ‘Wet Spell’ is particularly advantageous for Rabi crops production.
