West Bengal Assembly Holds Special Session for Death Penalty Bill

West Bengal Assembly is all set to discuss a bill proposing the death penalty for rapists and murderers. This comes after the horrific rape and murder of a medical doctor in Kolkata’s, R.G Kar Medical College. The outrage over the incident has led to demands for stricter laws.

Special Session Called After Public Outcry

A special two-day session of Parliament, a decision to hold which underlines the gravity the government is attaching to the matter, in more ways than one, appears to be a damage control exercise as the government has come under attack for how the case is being handled. The move is being widely interpreted as an attempt to put public concerns to rest.

Bill Expected to Pass Quickly

The bill would thus be expected to sail through without much hassle. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee threatened to stage a sit-in protest if the governor delayed giving his consent to the amended bill.

Capital Punishment Debate
