The announcement comes into play amidst ongoing investigations by the CBI into the rape and alleged murder of a PGT doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College in the first week of August. This decision has been taken by the disciplinary committee of the IMA. Incidentally, Dr. Ghosh is the vice president of the Kolkata branch. "The committee, constituted by Dr. R.V. Asokan, considered the gravity of the case relating to the postgraduate resident doctor and subsequent incidents at the medical college," IMA said in a statement.
The IMA general secretary and Asokan had visited the victim's family to help clear their grievances. The order mentions complaints over the manner in which Dr. Ghosh had handled the situation: "He showed no empathy and sensitivity. A doctor of his stature is expected to understand and share the anguish of the patient and her relatives.".

Further, the IMA, State Branch-Bengal, and all medical associations took up the matter in front and pointed out how his action had brought disrepute to the medical profession. Therefore, the Disciplinary Committee unanimously decides to suspend Dr. Ghosh from IMA with immediate effect.
Why this Decision?
Reports of Sandip Ghosh's suspension by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) following the death of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College being raped and murdered. Following the conclusion of the doctor's murder inquiry, Ghosh, the former principal of the college, was hit with claims about the trafficking of unclaimed remains and biological waste. Though these claims are unrelated to the ongoing criminal investigation into the doctor's death, they did have an impact on the IMA's decision to suspend Ghosh. The case has garnered a lot of attention and sparked more general conversations about safety and accountability in healthcare institutions.
