Rain gives reality check to the quality of construction we have. Every year we find at least one case somewhere in the country of a collapsing roof, buildings etc. This year is no exception. Due to the continuous rain in the city for the last 4-5 days, old constructions are getting weaker. 2 days ago, the roof of a hotel in Thane collapsed. Yesterday, on 27th June, in Samata Nagar, Thane, the balcony of a chawl collapsed, leading to injuries to a 33-year-old man.
A 33-year-old man was standing on the balcony of the top floor when some part of the balcony suddenly fell down. At the very moment, that victim was taken into nearby hospitals and now he is taking treatment.
The disaster Management Team of the Thane Municipal Corporation and local firemen ran for their service. They took off the remaining unstable portion of the balcony. To avoid any further risk, TMC decided to shift the remaining residents. They evacuated 42 families living in that chawl cum building. They were shifted to nearby schools and community halls.
An additional commissioner of TMC said that the construction was 25 year old and of substandard quality. TMC will hold inspections of other residential constructions to prevent any upcoming disaster.
