When the Fort was the Capital:
In the 14th century, members of the Tughlaq family ascended to the throne. Muhammad ibn Tughluq, the Sultan, led them. The Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq relocated the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad to establish a new city as his seat of power. He had faith that the fort's strategic placement and built-in protections would keep him secure. In 1327, the Sultan ordered all of his warriors, government employees, and even animals to relocate to Daulatabad from Delhi. Some of the travellers gave up along the way due to exhaustion, hunger, or thirst. The journey was arduous and filled with sadness. Unfortunately, the Sultan's decision to relocate the city was a mistake. Daulatabad lacked the water resources to support a sizable population. Because of inadequate facilities and services, the situation deteriorated.
The Reversal and Return:
Recognising the hardships faced by his people, Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq reversed his decision to make Daulatabad the capital after just one day. He realised the folly of his choice and decided to shift the capital back to Delhi. The aftermath of the ill-fated decision left Daulatabad largely abandoned, and the once-thriving city was reduced to a mere fortress. The fort changed hands several times over the centuries, witnessing the rise and fall of various dynasties.
