The government of Goa intends to send a letter to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, requesting a reevaluation of the GST Council's decision to impose a 28% tax on the total face value of bets in online gaming, casinos, and horse racing. Mauvin Godinho, the Industries Minister and the state's representative on the GST Council expressed concerns to journalists on Wednesday, stating that the imposition of this tax would have a highly adverse impact on the industry and negatively affect tourism in the coastal state of Goa.
"I have already discussed this matter with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who confirmed that he will be writing to the central government to reconsider this tax. The Chief Minister will address this issue with both the central government and the Finance Minister. Ultimately, it will be taken up for reconsideration by the GST Council," Godinho informed the reporters. According to him, the stakeholders in the online gaming, casino gaming, and horse racing sectors have expressed their desire for the taxation to be based on the gross gambling revenue (GGR) rather than the full face value.
