A truck allegedly collided with two vehicles in Dhargal near Mopa link road flyover on Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 63-year-old man and injuries to another person. Following the incident, angry villagers and locals set fire to two cranes at a nearby construction site on Mopa link road. Their demands included compensation for the victim's family and the apprehension of the truck driver responsible.
According to the police, the accident occurred at approximately 11:45 am when Namdev Kambli, the victim, was riding a scooter. The truck, which was involved in construction work at the Mopa link road flyover, reportedly crashed into the scooter and another vehicle. Tragically, the victim was trapped beneath the truck and succumbed to his injuries, while the truck driver fled the scene. The injured individual was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
A police officer stated that around 150 people from Suke Kulan village gathered for a protest, which escalated into a violent and disorderly situation when some protesters set ablaze two cranes. The protesters demanded compensation for the victim's family and the arrest of the accused driver. They also threatened to block the road leading to the Manohar International Airport and refused to move the deceased individual's body from the location, as reported by a police officer. In response to the situation, the police promptly deployed additional personnel to the area to maintain control. The local MLA also arrived at the scene and engaged in a dialogue with the protesters. Firefighters swiftly arrived at the spot to extinguish the fire.
The protesters were dispersed after a period of more than 90 minutes. Two First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed, one against the truck driver accused in the incident, and another FIR has been lodged for the act of arson. The police officer stated that appropriate legal measures are being taken in response.
