Customs officials reportedly conducted the "largest-ever seizure" on Friday at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, confiscating foreign currency from three Tajikistani nationals, totalling more than Rs 10 crores. The accused trio was apprehended while attempting to board a flight to Istanbul. The Customs department released a statement on Saturday, indicating that the case resulted from profiling efforts by the officers of Airport Customs, IGI Airport, Terminal-3, New Delhi.
The statement further mentioned that the three passengers were scheduled to travel to Istanbul on Flight No. TK 0717 on July 21 from T3, IGI Airport, New Delhi. The seizure of foreign currency was a result of a comprehensive examination of the passengers' baggage and personal search. The recovered currency included USD 7,20,000 and EUR 4,66,200, equivalent to Rs 10,06,78,410. The foreign currency was seized under section 110 of the Customs Act, of 1962, and an ongoing investigation is underway.
