"Urgency" in Resolving Ladakh Standoff: Doval and Wang Yi Meet in Russia

India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi have agreed on the need to intensify efforts to achieve full disengagement in eastern Ladakh. Both top officials held high-level talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Security Conclave in Russia, where both parties also emphasized the need to resolve month long tensions along their disputed border. The India China LAC standoff had begun after the violent clash in Galwan Valley in June 2020. And since then, 21 rounds of Corps Commander level talks have taken place, though a full resolution remains some distance away even as partial disengagement has been achieved at many friction points.

"75% of Disengagement Issues Resolved": Jaishankar

Recently, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar admitted that about 75% of the disengagement issues have been resolved. However, he pointed to growing unease on the extent of militarization along the LAC, which complicated the negotiations. Doval, during the meeting stated taht peace and tranquility in the border areas and respect for the LAC are a must to restore normalcy in India-China relations. Doval underlined that both countries have to strictly adhere to all existing agreements and protocols to arrive at  solution.

Bilateral Importance Beyond the Border

Apart from the current border tensions between the two countries, the Doval-Wang Yi meeting looked into the larger perspective of the India-China relationships. "Both the sides emphasized that stabilizing the India-China relationship is very important for the region and the world at large". Both of them spoke about increased mutual understanding and mutual trust, keeping the communications running uninterruptedly, and creating conditions congenial for the betterment of relations. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that China and India, as representatives of two of the oldest civilizations, besides being newly rising powers, should not go with confrontation but should go with cooperation. He hoped the differences were handled pragmatically so that the relations between both countries could become healthy and stable.

India and China would cooperate at all levels

India and China would cooperate at all levels-from diplomatic to military-to resolve further issues if any.
