Uniformity in the Ranks: Brigadiers and above to have Common Army Attire

In order to strengthen a shared identity and approach in service matters among the senior leadership, the army has decided to adopt a common uniform for officers of the rank of brigadier and above, officials familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. This decision follows the army's introduction of a new combat dress for all soldiers last year.

With the Indian Army preparing to implement a new uniform dress code for senior officers, generals from the Gorkha Rifles will no longer don their distinctive hats, their counterparts from particular armored regiments will no longer don brown shoes, and the brass of the Special Forces will bid adieu to the renowned maroon beret.

According to one of the sources stated above, senior officers will no longer wear accessories unique to their particular arms and services as of August 1 as a result of the new rules. These officers include the army chief, major generals, and lieutenant generals.

According to a second official, the senior officers' uniform will be consistent and standardized from headgear to shoulder rank badges and gorget patches (collar tabs) to belts and shoes. After careful consideration and long discussions with all parties involved, the decision to implement the unified uniform was made in April during the Army Commanders' Conference, which was headed by army chief General Manoj Pande.
