Uniform Civil Code set to be reviewed again by the Law commission

The law commission has started reviewing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) again with suggestions from public and religious organisations. Whoever wants to send their suggestions on UCC, they can send them within the next 30 days. Law commission is taking views on this matter by considering the relevance and importance of the subject in today's time.

The Uniform Civil Code provides a picture where each and everyone apart from their religion, caste, will be ruled by the same set of personal laws. Because till date in India there are different rules of personal laws, like the Hindu Marriage Act, Christian Marriage Act etc. Thus, divorce, marriage, all these things are governed under these religion-based laws. But UCC will abolish this system and there will be gender-based equality. But critics say that this will be direct interference in religious affairs.

Before this, the 21st law commission had already sought views on UCC through a questionnaire and also issued a consultation paper on 'Reforms of Family Law' in 2018. But the 22nd law commission is going to review things again due to time relevance of the subject.

As the law commission has taken this major step, people who are willing to give their opinions, suggestions, ideas, can send them through the 'click here' button provided on the website or  can send an email to a member secretary.
