Bangladesh and India are reeling from the terrible murder of Awami League MP Mohammad Anwarul Azim Anar, who vanished in Kolkata on May 13. The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the West Bengal Police are looking into the case together. Their findings point to a horrifying crime, including the dissection and disposal of the body.
Overview of the Incident
The government of Bangladesh announced on May 21 that Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of parliament, had been "brutally murdered" in Kolkata. Hours before the West Bengal Police officially declared that the CID was in charge of the case, the announcement was made. In spite of the announcement, the politician's body has not yet been found.
The Disappearance and Investigation
Azim vanished the next day after allegedly travelling to Kolkata on May 12 for medical attention. On May 18, Gopal Biswas, a friend in Kolkata, reported Azim missing after receiving shady messages on his phone. The mail was eventually verified to be fake, claiming that Azim had come to Delhi for urgent work.
To find Azim, the CID established a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Reliable information raised suspicions of foul play, which prompted more investigations into his disappearance. Teams of forensic experts started looking through a possible crime scene in a five-star flat in Kolkata's New Town.
The Murder and Disposal
According to CID Inspector-General Akhilesh Chaturvedi, credible reports indicated that Azim "may have been murdered." Azim was last seen with two males and a lady, raising suspicion on the 'honey-trap' angle, according to investigations. These people were spotted departing the apartment complex between May 15 and May 17, according to CCTV evidence that was found earlier today, but Azim was never seen again.
Jihad Hawaldar, an undocumented immigrant from Bangladesh living in Mumbai and working as a butcher, was apprehended by the authorities and later admitted his involvement in the crime. Hawaldar said that U.S. national Akhtaruzzaman, who is originally from Bangladesh, was the architect behind the murder. Following Akhtaruzzaman's instructions, Hawaldar and four other people killed Azim at the New Town flat by suffocating him.
Horrifying facts emerged during the investigation: in order to hide identification, the criminals skinned Azim's body, removed the flesh, and minced it. The remains were packed into plastic bags and disposed of across Kolkata. Bloodstains and plastic bags believed to have contained the body parts were found in the apartment.

Official Reactions and Ongoing Investigations
Asaduzzaman Khan, the home minister of Bangladesh, verified the murder and the apprehension of three people in Dhaka in connection with the case. He stressed that the authorities in Bangladesh and India are working together to determine the motivation and apprehend all those responsible.
The West Bengal CID is still looking for more proof and Azim's body parts. The case underlines the value of international collaboration in resolving transnational crimes and providing victims of such horrible atrocities with justice.
Conclusion
The brutal murder of Member of Parliament Anwarul Azim Anar serves as a terrifying reminder of the risks that prominent leaders may encounter. The goal of the West Bengal CID's current investigation and cooperation with Bangladeshi authorities is to apprehend the offenders and offer the victim's family and nation closure.
