Navneet Sehgal named as the new Prasar Bharti chairperson

The Indian government has named former bureaucrat Navneet Kumar Sehgal as the next Chairman of Prasar Bharati, the nation's public service broadcaster, ending a four-year gap. The President appointed the person based on the Selection Committee's recommendation.

"The President, on the recommendation of the Selection Committee, is pleased to appoint Shri Navneet Kumar Sehgal, IAS (retd) as the Chairman of the Prasar Bharati Board with effect from the date of his assuming charge of the post for a term of three years or until he attains the age of seventy years, whichever is earlier," read an order issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on March 15, 2024.

The new Prasar Bharti Chairman

Sehgal takes over for A Surya Prakash, whose term came to an end in February 2020 due to him surpassing the 70-year-old age threshold for the role.

The nomination came after a significant gathering on Friday to choose the new chairman of the nation's official broadcaster, which was presided over by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. In his capacity as the Rajya Sabha chairman, Dhankhar oversaw the selection committee that made this choice.

Vice president of India

Dhankhar, the Chairperson of the Press Council of India, Justice Ranjana Desai (retd), and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Sanjay Jaju made up the panel of three.

Prasar Bharati is in charge of the operations of Doordarshan, the national television network, and All India Radio, the national public broadcaster. After a protracted period without a permanent head, the organization is anticipated to receive new leadership and direction with the nomination of Sehgal as the next chairman.

With his significant bureaucratic expertise, Sehgal takes on the critical role of steering Prasar Bharati in its objective to serve the different interests of the Indian public via its numerous platforms and channels.
