The truth about Azim Premji scholarship - 2.5 lakh girl students with ₹30,000 a year support?

The Azim Premji Foundation has launched the Azim Premji Scholarship 2025, an initiative aiming to support up to 2.5 lakh girl students from government schools across 18 states in India. The scholarship provides an annual financial aid of ₹30,000 to help cover the cost of higher education for eligible students, specifically those entering undergraduate degree or diploma programmes in recognised institutions. This scholarship is intended to promote gender equality in education and empower girls from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue college education without financial barriers.

Eligible applicants must have completed both Class 10 and Class 12 from government schools or colleges in the specified states, and they must have secured admission as first-year students for the academic session 2025-26 in a recognised undergraduate degree or diploma course, ranging from two to five years in duration. The scholarship covers students enrolled in government institutions as well as select private colleges and universities throughout India.

The application process is conducted online through the Azim Premji Foundation’s official website, with the last date to apply being 30 September 2025. Required documents include academic mark sheets, Aadhaar card, bank details, and proof of college admission. Selected students will receive ₹30,000 annually for the entire duration of their course, provided they continue their studies without interruption.

From a broader perspective, this scholarship represents a significant step toward addressing the educational gender gap and economic challenges faced by many girl students in India. While ₹30,000 per year may not cover all educational expenses, it eases financial pressure and can encourage more families to support higher education for their daughters. It also highlights the role of private foundations in complementing government efforts in improving access to education. However, the impact of the scheme will depend on effective outreach to eligible students and transparency in selection.

This scholarship is a welcome initiative, but it also underscores the ongoing need for sustained investment and policy attention to empower girls through education in India, making it an important development to watch in the coming years.
