Ajay Bhatt, Minister of State for Defence, responded, "Yes, sir," to a question from a member of the Rajya Sabha about the government's plan to increase the number of women in the Indian Army.
The Minister announced several significant steps, stating that beginning in July 2022, 20 openings per year at the National Defence Academy in Pune will be reserved for women cadets in the army. His statement that there are 90 openings for women at the Short Service Commission, including 10 more openings that would become available in June 2023, was true.
But according to Mr. Bhatt, since March 2023, women officers have been allowed to join the artillery, as well as the remount and veterinary corps.He said that beginning in June 2021, women officers could join Army Aviation as pilots, and that starting in 2019, women could join the Indian Army in other ranks of the Corps of Military Police.
The Indian Army's medical cadres will employ a total of 1,212 women by July 1, 2023, including 168 in the Army Dental Corps (ADC), 3,841 in the Military Nursing Service (MNS), and 1,212 in the Army Medical Corps (AMC).The Indian Army has 1,733 female officers overall as of January 1, 2023 (excluding AMC, ADC, and MNS), he added.
When CPI MP Sandosh Kumar P inquired about the proportion of women in the medical and non-medical cadres of the Indian Army, as well as the government's plans to raise the proportion of women in the Indian Army, Mr. Bhatt was responding to his question.
