The 2 women from the infamous Manipur video get Supreme Court hearing today

After the people's outrage over the video in Manipur which got viral on July 19, now the Centre has become aware. The video of two women paraded naked and assaulted in Manipur by a group of people, has put the country in shock. After the video got viral, two women filed a petition to the Supreme Court against the Manipur state government and Centre. SC has transferred this case to the CBI but the women said that they have no confidence in the investigation process. Therefore, the SC will monitor the investigation. They also requested the Supreme Court to hide their identity and therefore, in the petition, both women are referred as X and Y. Women asked for impartial interference of the SC in the case.

Today, July 31, there was interrogation of the Centre and Manipur state governments by the Supreme Court where the SC asked six questions to them and asked for its response within 24 hours. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal is proceeding this case on behalf of two women.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said, "India hasn't experienced anything like this before in history in the case of communal disputes. This matter will not be justified by saying crimes against women are happening everywhere in Rajsthan, Bengal, Chhattisgarh." SC asked for the number of cases against women from a total of 6000 cases which were filed since the Manipur violence provoked in the state. But the government doesn't have any kind of data ready. And therefore, SC asked for the answer to the following six questions:

 1) Break up of cases

 2) Number of zero FIRs

 3) Number of transferred to the police station which has jurisdiction

 4) Number of arrested

 5) What is the status of legal help to the accused

 6) Registered statements under section 164

There was a large period gap between the date of the incident and the legal proceedings. This cruel incident happened on May 4. On May 18, zero FIR was registered and it was transferred to a concerned police station in June. In July, it got viral and people started questioning the government. Examining this whole process, SC described this as systematic violence as police supported the crowd instead of protecting those women.

According to the Supreme Court, a CBI and Special Investigation Team won't be sufficient. And therefore, there will be a special committee of women judges and civil society members who will ensure that the legal process will go to the doorstep of those women. Looking at the speed of investigation, so far seven people are behind bars.
