The Supreme Court reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday regarding the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj. The court questioned why the two were paraded before the media while being taken to a hospital for a medical check-up, just before they were shot dead by three men posing as journalists. The court also requested a status report on the investigation into the killing within three weeks, as well as on the encounter of Atiq's son, Asad Ahmed, who was shot dead by UP STF on April 13. A plea seeking an independent investigation into the killing of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf was being heard by the Supreme Court.
