Puducherry's lone woman minister S Chandira Priyanga resigns

In a groundbreaking move, Priyanga, the sole female legislator among the 30 assembly members, has tendered her resignation. Hailing from the Dalit community, she represents the Neduncadu reserved constituency in Puducherry's Karaikal region. Priyanga, who made history as Puducherry's first woman minister in four decades, conveyed her decision via social media.

In her heartfelt announcement, she cited the challenges she faced in the world of politics, expressing her inability to combat the influence of financial power. She also acknowledged that her Dalit identity seemed to ruffle some feathers and lamented the constant struggle against caste and gender bias.

She pledged to address the unwarranted criticism by highlighting her significant accomplishments during her two-year tenure as a minister. Priyanga expressed her gratitude to her constituents for their support and apologized for stepping down.

Moreover, Priyanga beseeched the Chief Minister to accept her resignation and appoint someone from a minority background to take her place. She emphasized the need to prevent individuals from gaining cabinet positions through financial means, which could be detrimental to marginalized communities, such as Dalits and Vanniyars. She advocated for a cabinet member from the Dalit, Vanniyar, or minority communities to maintain a sense of fairness.

Additionally, Priyanga urged the Chief Minister to ensure the uninterrupted implementation of welfare programs in her constituency. Her resignation marks a significant moment in Puducherry's political landscape, as she seeks to challenge the rights and representation of marginalized communities.
