Ramjas College, a respected institution under Delhi University, became the center of significant protests as students and faculty sought accountability over allegations of sexual harassment against a senior professor. The demonstrations, featuring passionate speeches and unity marches, ended with the professor’s resignation. Protesters emphasized ongoing issues within academic settings, calling for stronger protections for survivors.
While college officials pledged a fair investigation, the incident has heightened the demand for safer environments in educational institutions, ensuring that offenders face the consequences and building trust within the student community.
The Allegations and Accusations: The Whole Story Of The Incident
In December of 2024, a professor from the student welfare department of the college allegedly sexually harassed a particular minor girl. There have been similar accusations made against him before. In 2016, 2020, and 2023, students filed four complaints with the committee, including this one.
This time, quite understandably, the victim was not very keen on coming out, but all her classmates came in support of her and tried to persuade her to come out. Students from all the Association of AISA, SFI, and ABVP (RSS) protested on Wednesday demanding the suspension of the perpetrator professor.
Administrative Response
The college administration convened an emergency meeting in the wake of mounting pressure. Initially, the chair members took a defensive approach. but in the end, they gave in to the protesters' demands.
Principal Ajay Arora shared that he first heard about the incident on December 17 last year. “I visited the class and had a friendly chat with the students, asking them about their issues and more. On the 19th, the female student (victim) came to speak with me... I comforted her and promised to support her.”
The End Conclusion
The accused professor had resigned from his position as Joint Dean of Students' Welfare, according to the principal of Delhi University's Ramjas College, following a full day of student protest calling for his dismissal.
The principal mentioned that the professor was suspended for six weeks last December due to previous behavior. He also said that the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) is looking into the issue, and the administration will act according to their recommendations.
Does the Incident Raise Questions About Safety and Security in Educational Institutions?
The incident has reopened the discussion of harassment in educational facilities. Many campaigns and awareness have been carried out but sexual harassment remains to be one of the major concerns in educational institutions.
Many potential problems with organized complaint handling are currently illustrated by current structures, for instance, ICCs, which lack the necessary independence and efficiency adequate to manage complaints as they should be.
The protest at Ramjas College highlights the distance between policy and real action. It emphasizes the necessity for institutional reforms, including regular sensitization workshops, active complaint resolution processes, and promoting a culture of zero tolerance for harassment.
