During a meeting between Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and PM Modi, the Prime Minister was extended an invitation to inaugurate the new parliament building. This momentous construction project symbolizes the essence of a self-reliant India, reflecting the concept of "aatmanirbhar Bharat." The existing parliament building, which was constructed in 1927, is nearly a century old and no longer fulfills the present requirements, resulting in limited space and inconvenient seating arrangements for Members of Parliament (MPs), adversely affecting their work.

The foundation stone for the new building was laid by PM Modi in December 2020. The Lok Sabha Secretariat has emphasized that the construction of the new parliament building has been completed expeditiously while maintaining the highest standards of quality. The state-of-the-art facilities incorporated in the new building will empower the members to perform their duties more effectively and efficiently. As for the seating capacity, the new Rajya Sabha building can accommodate 300 members, providing an enhanced environment for the Upper House. Moreover, the Lok Sabha chamber in the new building will serve as the venue for joint sessions of parliament, facilitating the participation of all 1,280 MPs in these crucial gatherings.
