Today, the Supreme Court of India saw the addition of two new judges: Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra from the Andhra Pradesh High Court and senior lawyer Kalpathy Venkataraman Viswanathan. The oath of office was administered to them by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday. The Supreme Court has temporarily reached its complete strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India (CJI), as three judges—Justice KM Joseph, Justice Ajay Rastogi, and Justice V Ramasubramanian—are stepping down from their positions during the summer break. Following the retirements of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice MR Shah, the number of judges in the Supreme Court decreased from the sanctioned strength of 34 to 32. President Droupadi Murmu's office issued the warrant of appointment for Justice Mishra and Viswanathan as judges of the Supreme Court On Thursday. The new Law Minister, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced these appointments on Twitter. After the retirement of Justice JB Pardiwala on August 11, 2030, Justice Viswanathan is scheduled to take on the position of Chief Justice of India. He will hold this position until May 25, 2031.
