PM Modi Apologises to Elderly Residents of Delhi and Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sharply criticised the governments of Delhi and West Bengal for their failure to implement the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, attributing this inaction to 'political interests'. During a speech marking the 9th Ayurveda Day, he expressed regret over the plight of senior citizens in these states who are unable to access free medical treatment under the expanded programme.

An Apology to the Elderly
While inaugurating various health projects at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi, PM Modi extended his apologies to elderly citizens aged 70 and above in Delhi and West Bengal. He stated, "I apologise to all the elderly aged 70 and above in Delhi and West Bengal that I cannot serve them. I am aware of your pains and sufferings, but I won't be able to help you." He added that the refusal of local governments to join the scheme due to political motives is against the principles of humanity.

Free Treatment and New Card for Seniors
Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, senior citizens over 70 will be eligible for free hospital treatment and will receive an 'Ayushman Vaya Vandana' card. Modi lamented that while he could assist the elderly in other states, political barriers hinder assistance in Delhi and West Bengal.

Promising Milestones Ahead
PM Modi launched health development projects worth over ₹12,850 crore on the occasion of Ayurveda Day, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of medicine. He reaffirmed his commitment made during the recent general elections, stating that all citizens aged 70 and above would be incorporated into the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. He emphasised that this initiative would alleviate the financial burden on families with elderly members, making it a significant milestone in healthcare.
