Patanjali faces legal notice over 'Cuttlefish Bones' in vegetarian dental product

A law firm based in Delhi has recently served Patanjali Ayurved with a legal notice, alleging that the company has incorporated a "non-vegetarian" ingredient in its dental care product called 'Divya Dant Manjan.' According to the notice, the use of Samudra Fen, a substance derived from cuttlefish bones containing calcium carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, and silica, is a violation of consumer rights and labelling regulations. The law firm argues that Patanjali's product is misleadingly marketed as vegetarian, which is offensive to religious sentiments.

The legal notice demands that Patanjali provide clarification regarding the matter within a period of 15 days, with a warning of potential legal proceedings if the issue remains unresolved. The law firm highlights the significant trust consumers place in Patanjali products due to their faith in Baba Ramdev, the renowned yoga guru, and emphasizes the expectation for the company to maintain high standards of ethics and transparency.

Despite attempts to obtain further comments from the lawyer who issued the notice, no additional information was received. Similarly, Patanjali did not respond to inquiries made via WhatsApp and phone calls. On Patanjali's official website, Divya Dant Manjan is promoted as a highly effective dental care product, claiming to strengthen gums, address dental problems, eliminate bad breath, and promote overall oral health. It is worth noting that Samudra Fen is listed as one of the 16 ingredients used in Divya Dant Manjan, as stated on Patanjali's website.
