  • Trump’s Ceasefire Claim Sparks Row: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, described Trump’s claim of brokering peace as a diplomatic embarrassment and an "insult to India's sovereignty." BJP President JP Nadda accused the Congress of using these statements to divert attention from critical national matters.

PM Modi Addresses the Nation and Parliament Ahead of Session

In his media address ahead of the Monsoon Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tackled the Pahalgam incident head-on. He commended the Indian armed forces for their swift and decisive response during Operation Sindoor—a classified military operation launched in retaliation. PM Modi emphasized that the mission was executed with “100% success” within 22 minutes and had restored global confidence in India’s military strength.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also acknowledged the country’s achievements in space exploration and congratulated astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla on his space mission involving the Indian flag at the International Space Station.

Air India Crash: Aviation Minister Urges Respect for Probe Process

Union Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu addressed both Houses about the tragic Air India AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 274 lives. He criticized the speculative narrative being spread by international media and called for faith in the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), which has already released a preliminary report.

According to the report, two crucial fuel control switches were mysteriously moved to the 'CUTOFF' position during takeoff—a development under detailed investigation. Naidu stressed that conclusions must await the final report to ensure justice based on facts.

Bills On the Agenda: A Heavy Legislative Load

Despite the disruptions, the Monsoon Session has a busy legislative calendar. Spanning from July 21 to August 21, with a recess from August 12 to August 18, this session includes 21 sittings over 32 days.

  1. Income-Tax Bill, 2025: Introduced during the Budget Session, this bill aims to restructure and simplify the Income Tax Act of 1961. The Select Committee, led by Baijayant Panda, has completed its review and presented its findings. The bill is expected to be tabled for passage.

  2. Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025: Designed to promote ease of doing business by decriminalizing minor offences and enhancing regulatory compliance.

    • The Indian Ports Bill, 2025

    • The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024

    • The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024

  4. Financial Business: Parliament will also vote on the Demands for Grants (Manipur) for FY 2025–26 and related appropriation bills.

  5. State of Manipur: A resolution seeking approval to extend President’s Rule in Manipur—first imposed in February 2025—will also be discussed under Article 356(1) of the Constitution.

All-Party Meeting: Calls for Cooperation and Unity

Ahead of the session, an all-party meeting was held with representatives from 51 political outfits. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju appealed for cooperation, while Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar called for mutual respect among parties to ensure meaningful deliberations.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, echoing the spirit of parliamentary dignity, posted on X (formerly Twitter) urging MPs to work together for the smooth functioning of the House.
