Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian awards in the country, are given in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The Awards are granted in a variety of disciplines and sectors of activity, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service.
"Padma Bhushan" is given for exceptionally distinguished service of the highest grade, "Padma Shri" for outstanding service in any field, and "Padma Vibhushan" for extraordinary and distinguished service. The prizes are announced annually on Republic Day.

Notable recipients of the Padma Awards this year from the entertainment industry
Vyjayantimala and Chiranjeevi have been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian decoration.
Throughout his decades-long career, Chiranjeevi has acted in over 160 films. This is his second Padma Award; he was given the Padma Bhushan in 2006. The actor, who is set to feature in Vassishta of Bimbisara fame's Vishwambhara, nearly took a break from acting. The Padma Shri recipient Vyjayantimala is recognized as the pioneering female superstar in Indian movie history. She acted in several well-known films, such as Jewel Thief, Gunga Jumna, Devdas, Naya Daur, Aasha, and Sadhna. Ganwaar is still her last movie.
In addition to these, late Tamil politician and actor Vijayakanth received a Padma Bhushan as a posthumous recognition for his services. He passed away in December 2023.
Padma Bhushan has also been given to actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty, Usha Uthup, and Pyarelal Sharma of the musical duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Mithun is one of the most popular actors in Indian cinema. His breakthrough performance was in Mrigayaa, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor. Usha Uthup, the pop queen, is credited with introducing jazz music to Indian cinema in the 1970s. Ramba Ho, One Two Cha Cha, Shaan Se, Koi Yahaan Nache Nache, and Hari Om Hari are just a few of her timeless songs.
The list of Padma Awards 2024
Every year in March or April, Rashtrapati Bhawan hosts ceremonial occasions where the President of India bestows these Awards. The President has authorized the presentation of 132 Padma Awards for the year 2024, including two pair cases (where the Award is counted as one). There are 110 Padma Shri Awards, 17 Padma Bhushan Awards, and 5 Padma Vibhushan Awards on the list. In addition to the eight individuals from the category of Foreigners / NRI / PIO / OCI and the nine posthumous honorees, thirty of the awardees are women.
