Orange Alert in Chennai: Heavy Rains Expected Till October 17

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) announced, excessive rain may continue in all parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from 15 to 17th October. Rain is likely to intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday. Weather Warnings Issued Orange alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts on October 15 and 16. Heavy rains are likely to continue at isolated places in all these districts on Wednesday. Heavy rains may continue in the city for at least 36 to 48 hours  mainly between midnight and dawn.

Rainfall Data and Predictions

Madurai received the maximum rainfall in Tamil Nadu, 16 cm rainfall was recieved in  24 hours ending on Sunday morning. Very heavy rain was received at seven other places as well. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been receiving above-average rainfall during this season, registering 95.3 mm between October 1 and 13 with a increase of 66% over the 57.4 mm of the same period over the last several years.

Causes of the Rainfall

Two low-pressure points are responsible for this spell of rain, One of the low-pressure area is over the east-central Arabian Sea and another cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal. According to S Balachandran, additional director general of meteorology at RMC Chennai said, "Interaction between these two systems will eventually lead to heavy rain in the region." Experts say there is little chance that the city will flood.

The Tamil Nadu government has prepared an integrated command centre in view of heavy rain from October 15, deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said. A 24/7 helpline, '1913', has been launched, and the public is advised to download the TN ALERT app for further updates. With some areas predicted to receive more than 20 cm of rain, the government is focusing on saving lives and property. 13,000 volunteers, 100 motor pumps and relief camps were mobilised. Most storm-water drainage work is completed and backup generators and equipment are in position for 356 pumping stations.
