An extensive fraud in the acquisition of high-speed diesel by the Indian Railways has been brought to light. The Vigilance Department's routine inspection conducted by its vigilance team detected inconsistencies in the purchase of high-speed diesel from national oil companies by the Indian Railways. According to a report in The Hindu, railway sources have stated that an examination of high-speed diesel procurement carried out by the North East Frontier Railway found irregularities in Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited's operations during January-September 2022.
The investigation team has reported the anomaly to the Railway Board, and as per sources, the Principal Financial Advisor of the Northeast Frontier Railway has been instructed to retrieve the surplus funds paid to the oil corporations. In addition, the Vigilance Department has requested other zones to inspect their records for similar overpayments. Furthermore, the department has suggested the implementation of a system to prevent such discrepancies in the future.
