Based on research by Access Now and the KeepItOn coalition, India ordered as many as 84 internet shutdowns last year and topped the list of countries that ordered it for the fifth consecutive year. These shutdowns were imposed for a number of reasons, including clashes, protests, elections, and school exams.
As per further research, Jammu and Kashmir experienced the most Internet shutdowns in 2022 with 49, the most of any state in the nation. This included a series of 16 straight orders for three-day shutdowns throughout the area in January and February 2022. West Bengal was the following state to order restrictions seven times after Rajasthan authorities had ordered them 12 times.
The report is titled as ‘Weapons of control, shields of impunity: Internet shutdowns in 2022’.
