A tragic incident occurred in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal on Tuesday, where an unauthorized firecracker factory in Egra was rocked by a devastating explosion, leading to the loss of nine lives. As a result of the blast, grey smoke billowed from the site.
Promptly, residents rushed to assist those affected by the explosion, and the injured individuals were quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Police sources have disclosed that the factory had previously undergone a raid last month, which resulted in legal actions being taken against the owner. However, despite this crackdown, the production of firecrackers persisted within the facility, according to the police.
The investigation into the Egra explosion, which claimed the lives of nine people, has now been taken over by the Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID). To support the families of the deceased, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh.
In response to the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee revealed that the individual responsible for the accident had been arrested previously. However, after obtaining bail, they resumed their operations at the illegal factory. The owner, who has since fled to Odisha, is currently evading capture. Mamata Banerjee also emphasized that the Bengal CID has assumed control of the Egra case.
